Science: Inflating a Balloon

Today the children of Room 3 were scientists. Ask your children about what we did.

First we looked at the materials we were going to use and made a HYPOTHESIS (a prediction) of what we thought was going to happen to the balloon.

Next, we carried out the experiment. It was very exciting.

Finally, we looked at what really happened.

What did we see? What did we hear? What happened to the balloon? What did it feel like?

PMP

Today was Room 3's last PMP (Perceptual Motor Programme) session for the year. We have loved our Friday PMP sessions and feel very lucky to have been a part of this for term 3.

We would like to give a HUGE thank you to Mrs Herbert, the teacher aides and the parent helpers that made this programme possible this term.

Market Day

Today it was Market Day at our school. We got to spend our money on food, games, toys, decorations, balloons and lots of other fantastic things. Room 3 sold our Squish Balls fill of play-dough. We sold out they were so popular. They were really cool because the balloons do not pop. We think Market Day was amazing and a lot of fun.

Here are some photos from Market Day.

Play-dough Balloons

It is our school market day on Tuesday. Room 3 have been hard at work making play-dough balloons to sell.

  • First of all we made the play-dough using a non-cook recipe.

Non-Cook Play-dough

Ingredients:
  • 2 cups of plain flour
  • ½ cup salt
  • 2 tbsps Cream of Tartar
  • 1½ cups of boiling water
  • 2 tbsps oil (I use vegetable)
  • Food Colouring (optional)

Method:
  • Combine dry ingredients in a bowl
  • Combine wet ingredients and add to dry ingredients
  • Stir together well
  • Knead vigorously
  • Play

Handy Tips:

- Too wet/sticky? Add more flour. Too dry/not coming together well? Add more water. Play with the recipe slightly until it works perfectly for you.

- We've found the more you knead the dough, the better it goes.

- As this recipe uses boiling water, please supervise children at all times.

- If you allow your water to cool before adding it, your playdough will not work properly as it will not be hot enough to dissolve the salt or bring all the ingredients together properly. We get all our other ingredients ready and then we add our wet ingredients as soon as the kettle is boiled so that it is still nice and hot.

  • Then we had to stretch open the balloons and fill them with play-dough.

  • Lastly, we drew a face on the balloons using a felt pen.

Oobleck

Oobleck

Goal: to make oobleck.

Materials
You will need:

  • 1 Cup of Water
  • 1.5-2 Cups of Cornflour
  • Food colouring
  • Measuring cup
  • Bowl
  • Spoon
Steps
1. Pour 1 cup of water into the bowl.
2. Slowly pour in 1.5-2 cups of cornflour. Keep mixing as you pour in the cornflour.
3. Add some food colouring.
4. Check the mixture if it is still too watery add more cornflour.

Here's a list of things to do:
  • Grab a handful and squeeze it. Let it ooze through your fingers.
  • Make a puddle and quickly drag your fingers through it.
  • Put it into a plastic container and shake it or quickly bump it against a table.
  • Jab at the oobleck and then slowly let your finger sink in.
  • Roll some oobleck into a ball. It becomes solid, but when you stop moving it, it will melt back into your hand.

Amazing Skipping

Skipping has been a big focus in Room 3 this term.
We love skipping...

  • Forwards
  • Backwards
  • Running
  • with a Long Rope

Ask your child to share some of their new skipping skills at home.

Can I do a running skip?
Can I do a double bounce skip?
Can I do tens skips in a row?
Can I skip backwards?
Can I do some skipping tricks?
Can I skip on a long rope?

Science

Today we mixed liquids with liquids.

We mixed food colouring and water together. The water turned green. They mixed well together.

Next we added oil. We shook it together but when we looked at the jar 5 minutes later we saw that the oil did not mix very well. It stayed on the surface.

Science with Mrs Lei

Today Mrs Lei came to visit Room 3. She came to tell us about science and to do a science experiment with us. We made a Rocket.

How to make a Rocket
You will need:

  • Baking Soda
  • Vinegar
  • Film Canister
  • Tea Spoon
1. Fill 1/2 the film canister with vinegar.
2. Get a teaspoon of baking soda.
3. Put the baking soda into the film canister really fast.
4. Quickly put the lid on and turn it upside down.
5. Stand back and watch it blast off into the air.

THANK YOU Mrs Lei for a fabulous science afternoon!
