Maths Focus: Fractions
This week we will be focusing on fractions.
We are learning to...
-Find a half or quarter of a shape or object
-Find a half or quarter of a set of objects by sharing them into groups
-Recognise the symbol for a half and a quarter
-Know what the top and the bottom number in a fraction means
-Understand that fractions are made up of equal parts or sets
To extend our fraction knowledge we will be relating fractions to everyday situations and problems. We will also look at other fractions including thirds, fifths and tenths.

Home Help Ideas:
- Fractions are about sharing in equal parts. Sharing toys, food or objects is great for understanding how to sort sets of objects into equal groups so everyone has the same amount (making it fair).
- We use fraction in our everyday life when we bake. Letting your child help you bake and talking about the measurements e.g. 1/4 cup of flour is great for children's understanding of fractions and how we use them.
- Fractions can be shown with food. Cutting food such as an apple or a pizza in half or into quarters is a way for your child to get hands on experience in creating fractions.
