Whaea Philipa came to Otonga School to teach us about Harakeke.
We learnt that Harakeke grows as a whanau or family. The baby is in the centre surrounded by the mother and the father as the flax grows new babies grow. The outer flax layers become the grandparents and great grandparents. A flax will not grow without the mother, father and baby. They should never be cut.
Before we began working with the flax we said a karakia. It is an important time of the year in Maori culture. Matariki is the Maori New Year. In celebration of this we made a star (or a whetu).
Here is what we did...

Tihi Reserve
Today we had an amazing adventure at Tihi Reserve. We were sent on a scavenger hunt to find and discover as many items as we could. We also made discoveries of our own.
A huge THANK YOU to all of our parent helpers. We had a ratio of 1:4 which was just perfect for this full on exploration through the forest.
